Memories-of-great-men-&-women-of-the-age

Bought at the Theatre Bookshop, New Road,
Brighton Sussex,
Saturday, 18th February 1967.
(96 years after it was first published).
Miss Stella Rosetta Martin
Lancing, Sussex

Miss Judith Tee was the owner of the shop then, moved
there in 1945 and was my friend until she died March 13th 1973
aged 56, 5 1/2 months after my mother died.
I worked at Lyons Maid Sales Office, Worthing, when bought
this book, secretary to Area Manager, there 9 years, was
made redundant June 30th, 1972.

No one could guess how thrilled I am
to have spotted this book and to own it
after all these years. How I would dearly
have loved to have known the author Mr
S.C. Hall personally, as we seem to have so
much an affinity in thought & opinion &
feelings – even allowing for the great gulf
of a century & a half that separates our
generations.

I feel as though I am walking hand in hand
with him through the years.

Memories of Great Men & Women of the Age by S.C. Hall, F.S.A.

Thank you to Kevin, who says, “I bought this book in the UK around 2000.
It was published in 1877. Common wisdom has it that inscriptions, unless by
a famous person, reduce the value of an old book. To me this inscription
proves the opposite and makes the value of the book. The personal thoughts
connect the 19th century to the 20th and including it in The Book Inscriptions
Project brings it into the 21st.

I have switched the order of the first two paragraphs as that seems to make
more sense. I think the first one was written later where it happened to fit on the page.”
