“The inscription is in Japanese. It reads: ‘Ganbatte kudasai!’ a common exhortation
in Japan, which translates as ‘Do your best!” or ‘Persevere!’ In this case, the meaning
is closer to ‘Don’t give up!’

It’s a terrific way to inscribe a book about traveling in Japan for someone who hasn’t
been, but clearly wants to.”
