Found by David Highland, who says:

“The two page letter still resides in my library in a well-read, battered first
edition of Watership Down by Richard Adams. Emma is unaware of the letter.

The rest of the story of this inscription is in the letter itself. If I were to give this
entry a title, I guess I’d quote the letter with ‘Perhaps I’m still living…perhaps not.’”
